How To Decorate A Small Front Porch

by James T. Burcham August 30, 2019 No Comments

A small front porch need not be neglected due to its size where decorating is concerned. Sure, you’re working with a limited amount of space but the more creative you can be with your porch design ideas, the more unique and inviting your front porch stoop will be to your visitors and guests.

When it comes to improving your home’s curb appeal, the front porch is one of the crucial elements to consider simply because it’s the first thing people encounter when they come to your house. Homeowners with custom porches Potomac should heed these decorating tips for making the most of their limited space.

Accent Rugs

The concept of layering a rug on top of another isn’t exactly the most innovative idea in the world but it sure does have an effective impact for bringing out some personality in your little stoop. Pulling off this look is super simple, you place an outdoor rug directly beneath your welcome mat, and voila, your tiny stoop has some identity.

Sizing here is key, of course. You want the accent rug to stick out from under the welcome mat to provide a border of color or pattern around the outside edge.

Splash of Color

Due to the cramped nature of small front porches you don’t necessarily get a whole lot of light in the entryway to your home, particularly if your porch has a roof overhead. But one way to brighten your front stoop is to go bold with the color of your front door.

Think bright, not garish. So consider the exterior color of your home and make sure you’re using a front door color that doesn’t clash. Perhaps a bright shade of blue or even yellow. These can make your front door stand out and make your porch a little more inviting.

Accessorize the Surroundings

You’re working with limited space here so you want to walk that fine line between decorating and cluttering the front stoop of the home. Consider changing out your lighting fixtures to something that has a bit more flair. Plants are always a welcome addition to the home, both indoors and out. Placing some planters around the front door or up the front stairs can add a lot of personality.

If you’re too concerned about taking up valuable real estate in which to walk and step, try hanging plants instead. That way you won’t have to worry about guests trying to navigate around things you’re afraid they might knock over by mistake.

A small bench or seating area is also a nice touch to make the front stoop feel more comfortable and familiar. You can even place shoes and boots underneath if you have implemented a “no shoes in the house” policy to preserve your flooring and carpets.

Seasonal Decorating

The door has long been a decorative element of the home for wreathes around Christmastime and spooky ghosts or witches for Halloween. Get creative about hanging things on your front door to give the porch some additional character.
